The Class 86 Bo-Bo locomotives, originally designated AL6, were built between 1965 and 1966. Forty, numbered E3101 to E3140, being built by British Rail Doncaster Works, and sixty, numbered E3141 to E3200, built by English Electric Vulcan Foundry in Newton-le-Willows.
E3170 was built by English Electric and introduced in June 1965 and given the TOPS number 86 002 in 1973. Following being fitted with Flexicoil suspension to allow for 100mph running in 1986 it was renumbered into the 86/4 sub class as 86 402 and is the condition of this model in BR Blue livery.
In late 1989 it was reclassified as a new subclass 86/6 as 86 602 having the electric train heating isolated and re-gearing to a lower maximum speed of 75 mph and repainted into Railfreight Distribution livery for operation in pairs on long-distance freight services.
86 602 was finally withdrawn and scrapped at Crewe works in 2010.
Prototype image below shows 86 402 at London Euston with the 1000 departure to Preston on 2nd April 1989.

Prototype image below shows 86 402 passing Crewe with the 1610 Manchester Piccadilly to London Euston on 23rd July 1989.
