31-394SF Bachmann Class 414 2-HAP 2-Car EMU 6089 BR Blue SOUND FITTED

New release - pre-orders invited - expected Sep/Oct 2025. preauthkernow

Bachmann Branchline pioneered the production of Southern Third Rail Electric Multiple Units (EMUs) with the introduction of the 4CEP, the first contemporary OO Scale model of its type and since that seminal release, further first generation EMUs have joined the Branchline range. The 2-HAP (later Class 414) is the most recent introduction and now, we are delighted to present this stunning two car set in BR Blue livery for the first time.

Like the real units, this 2-HAP comprises a Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) and a Driving Trailer Composite Lavatory (DTCL) and both vehicles are constructed from precision moulded bodyshells that are adorned with fine detail from the door handles, hinges and bumpers, to the steps at the inner ends. Metal wire handrails and filler pipes are also fitted to the inner ends, whilst the driving cabs are adorned with multiple working equipment, windscreen wipers and horns on the roof above, all fitted separately. Underneath each vehicle the truss frames and brake gear is depicted, along with a full set of auxiliary equipment and boxes. The flush glazed windows give a view of the internal seating which is made all the more visible thanks to the interior lighting, whilst the cab is fitted with a driver’s seat, control desk and brake wheel.

With conductive couplings employed between the two vehicles, mounted on close-coupling mechanisms, NEM coupling pockets are also fitted to the bogies at each end allowing multiple units to be coupled together. Each wheelset is fitted with electrical pickups and capacitors are used to provide back-up power preventing light flicker. Just a single 21 Pin decoder is required to use the model on DCC, or why not opt for a SOUND FITTED model which comes pre-fitted with a ESU Sound Decoder to provide authentic sound effects on DCC or Analogue Control straight out of the box.

2-HAP/CLASS 414 HISTORY

The British Rail Class 414 (or 2-HAP) was a BR standard design of 2-car 90mph Electric Multiple Unit (EMU). Built across four distinct batches between 1957 and 1963, the units saw use as part of the Southern Region’s express fleet and were geared to work with other EMUs including the Class 411 4-CEPs.

The 2-HAP designation was an evolution of the earlier 2-HALs – 2 cars with Half-A-Lavatory. The HAPs could well have shared the same nomenclature but as they also featured electro pneumatic brakes, the final character was changed to a P resulting in the 2-HAP. The first batch of HAPs to be built shared similar electronics to the 1951-built 4-EPB and 2-EPB units and were distinguished by their roof mounted lighting conduits and full length step boards – these were designated as 1951-type, Phase 1 units. The second batch were also Phase 1 units but were denoted as 1957-type because they featured updated control equipment. Visually, the second batch could be distinguished from the first by the lack of lighting conduit on the roof, with just the pipework for the lavatory water tanks remaining, and the step boards that ended either side of the toilet compartment.

The third and fourth batches were both 1957-type, Phase 2 units, which featured Mk3B motor bogies and Commonwealth bogies at the inner ends, except for the different bogies the third batch was otherwise visually little different to the second batch of 1957-type, Phase 1 units. The fourth and final batch differed from the others by having a modified cab end arrangement, with a smaller headcode aperture, and these units also reverted back to the Mk4 motor bogies used on the Phase 1 builds.

Originally numbered 6001-6173, under the Total Operations Processing System (TOPS) the units were first classified as 412 and 424 to differentiate the 1951-type and 1957-type respectively, but soon after all were reclassified as 414s – 414/2 for the 1951-type units and 414/3 for the 1957-type. Withdrawals began in 1982 when the cost of asbestos removal was deemed too great for much of the fleet, although some units did have their asbestos removed and survived in service until the final withdrawal in 1995.
