The Humber Super Snipe was made by the British car manufacturer Humber Limited (later the Rootes Group) between 1938 and 1967. It was the company’s flagship over five series of the marque between 1957 and 1967. Of all the Humber models only the Snipe appeared as an Estate version from 1957. Big, heavy and underpowered, fired by an Armstrong Siddeley 4 cylinder engine, nevertheless it was loved by upmarket motorists – there was even a picnic table for rear seat passengers - as well as the public sector including the Police and even taxi drivers. The luxurious interior ensured comfort and space while the boxy exterior and window configuration was very reminiscent of American Chevrolet models of the period, which greatly influenced Rootes vehicle production. In 1960, you could buy a Super Snipe Estate for around £2000. The series ended with the MkV Estate which sported a split tailgate.
Here at Oxford, Humbers have appeared in various shapes and scales, both 1:76 and 1:148 and amongst those, the Super Snipe Estate has been released in several guises too, mono-coloured, two-tone, as Police and Taxi vehicles and for its latest entrance it is registered JKT321E from 1967, the last year of production. It is painted in a muted grey colour scheme with black and chrome exterior finish. The interior features bright red seating with mid brown dashboard and black steering wheel.
