History
First introduced in 1872, by the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway, by 1880, 50 of these ‘A1’ Class 0-6-0T locomotives were built at Brighton Locomotive Works to the design of William Stroudley. This one started out numbered 43 and named ‘Gipsyhill’ on 15 June 1877 and was subsequently renumbered 643 by the LB&SCR. It went on to be rebuilt to ‘A1X’ in 1919, but was sold by the Southern Railway for £785 to the Weston, Clevedon & Portishead Light Railway in December 1925, famously entering GWR stock in 1940. It passed into nationalisation but was withdrawn in January 1950 and scrapped at Swindon in March 1954.
