38-030C Bachmann HHA Bogie Hopper Freightliner Heavy Haul

The HHA Bogie Hopper Wagons were introduced in 2000 and at almost 20m in length, were some of the largest wagons operating on the UK network. With a capacity of 73.5 tonnes and fitted with 4 automatic discharge doors, Freightliner had built up a fleet of 446 HHAs by 2005 for use on coal traffic. However, as the UK’s dependency on coal-fired power stations reduced, so did the need for such vast numbers of coal hoppers resulting in most of the HHAs being stored, scrapped or converted for new traffic. As far as conversions go, many have been shortened to carry stone, which is denser than coal, and so the wagon’s maximum payload can be carried in a smaller volume. The shortened HHAs were given the code HHA-E.

The Bachmann Branchline model faithfully recreates this behemoth in OO Scale, including a detailed hopper interior with the bottom doors engraved into the hopper floor, and the strengthening ribs added within. Outside, the model shares the industrious appearance of its prototype, with a silver-grey finish to capture the bare-metal appearance of the real wagons set against the green chassis and detailed bogies.
