‘Mink’ is the GWR telegraphic code for standard box vans. The term 'iron' Mink is an informal one as these covered vans could be used interchangeably with wooden bodied vans to carry all forms of goods which needed protection from the weather. They were however favoured for transport of foodstuffs such as flour and grain as the metal body offered better protection against rats.

In WW2 some of these vehicles were used as Improvised Gunpowder Vans because of their, less flammable, all metal construction.
