This remarkable 1:76 scale model of the Churchill Bridge Layer offers a captivating glimpse into military engineering for your modelling projects. Comprising 129 parts and rated at Skill Level 2, this kit is designed for enthusiasts aged 8 and up, providing an engaging assembly experience that reflects the innovative design of this essential support vehicle. The Tank Bridge No.2 could be deployed in a mere 1.5 minutes, supporting a Class 60 tracked load and a Class 40 wheeled load over a 30ft span, with the bridge maintaining a horizontal position as it was manoeuvred across gaps by its pivot arm mechanism.
The Churchill Bridge Layer was an ingenious answer to the enduring challenge of swiftly crossing gaps, rivers, and obstacles while maintaining the momentum of advancing forces. Built on the turretless chassis of the Churchill tank, this specialised vehicle could deploy its 30-foot bridge in just 90 seconds, providing crucial support to both armoured and wheeled units.
The bridge was mounted as a single piece on the tank and featured a unique launching mechanism. This mechanism involved a pivoting arm with rollers attached to the front of the vehicle, with the opposite end connected to the bridge's centre. This clever design ensured the bridge remained level throughout its deployment, as the pivot arm lifted and then gently lowered it across the gap.
Once in place, the Tank Bridge No.2 could accommodate a Class 60 tracked load, allowing heavy tanks to cross safely, as well as a Class 40 wheeled load for lighter vehicles. This combination of quick deployment, strong load capacity, and the reliability of the Churchill chassis made the Bridge Layer an invaluable asset to British and Allied forces during World War Two, especially during the challenging advances across Europe where rivers, craters, and destroyed infrastructure frequently threatened to impede progress.
The Churchill platform was ideally suited for this specialised role, with its robust suspension and excellent off-road capability ensuring the Bridge Layer could reach forward positions where it was most needed. These vehicles served with distinction in the Royal Engineers, transforming potential obstacles into minor delays and keeping armies moving forward.
