NR28B Peco Brake Van in BR Bauxite livery No B952116. One of these brake vans would be conveyed at the rear of all freight trains. It contained accommodation for the Guard and emergency equipment. With the advent of fully fitted trains Brake Vans were no longer required, with the Guard riding in the locomotive's rear cab. Brake Vans would still be required when hazardous materials were carried, or when the train would be required to make several shunt moves.
