The British Rail Class 159 were first built by British Rail Engineering Limited (BREL)'s Derby Litchurch Lane Works as Class 158. Before entering service with Network South East, in January 19893, the original 22 units were modified at Rosyth Dockyard becoming Class 159 to operate services from London Waterloo to Salisbury and Exeter St David’s. In 2007, eight further Class 159/1 units were created for South West Trains by rebuilding surplus Class 158 units displaced from TransPennine Express.

The units were refurbished several times by South West Trains that included changes livery, retrimming / replacing seats, internal painting, lighting and the fitment of passenger information systems and CCTV.
The units were initially introduced in Network South East livery followed by both South West Trains and the modified SWT express livery. In August 2017 the South Western franchise was taken over by First MTR and operated as South Western Railway and introduced the new blue and silver-grey livery as depicted by the KMRC Exclusive model.
