KMRC Skrifa - Staff layouts#3 – Collingwood – 00 Gauge

Within our team at KMRC as well as simply selling model railways we pride ourselves on being able to offer practical advice for our customers in our branches as many of the team are experienced railway modellers in a wide range of gauges, eras and control systems.

This is the third of a series of Skrifa posts to highlight some of the layouts built by our team members.

Simon Paley can be found, usually on Saturdays, at our Guildford branch, he is also Senior Designer (Signalling) for Network Rail. His excellent book Colour Light Signalling for Model Railways can be obtained here>>>

Collingwood is a ‘OO’ Gauge exhibition layout of a fictionalised version of Fareham in Hampshire (on the former Southern Region) and set in the period 2003 – 2017. The layout presents the busy junction between the Portsmouth to Southampton ‘West Coastway’ and the line between Portsmouth and Eastleigh and is designed to educate the viewer about the operation of the current privatised railway as well as present an aesthetically pleasing layout!

Collingwood

Featured is not only the aforementioned junction, but also the station at Fareham with its unusual centre bay Platform, a extensively modified Stone Terminal and a representation of one of the harbours dotted around the island of Portsea.

The layout features a mixture of modern and traditional building techniques, including lots of 3D Printed detailing parts, but also uses scratch-building and kit bashing of several HO Scale kits (which has caused lots of confusion within the Guildford Branch).

Collingwood’s ‘Party piece’ is a full prototypical signalling system controlled via a computer and displayed on a large screen behind the layout at exhibitions. Trains are controlled via DCC working off Smart Phones.
