Level crossing keepers were often provided with a small house, usually a bungalow, to live in. This meant that the keeper was on call 24 hours a day to make sure that the crossing gates were opened and shut as required. This design is also suitable for use as a gate lodge for a country estate or in an urban park for a park keeper.
