The extensive rail network of Yorkshire and the North East had been born out of the optimism of the pre-grouping companies moving large quantities of coal and goods, supplemented by passenger revenues. By the start of the 1970s it was a very different affair as already many routes had lost their passenger services, this was in spite of many locations not being served with an adequate bus service.
