KMRC Skrifa - Staff layouts#5 – "Crossing for Safety" British Transport Police Diorama - 00 Gauge

Within our team at KMRC as well as simply selling model railways we pride ourselves on being able to offer practical advice for our customers in our branches as many of the team are experienced railway modellers in a wide range of gauges, eras and control systems.

This is the fifth of a series of Skrifa posts to highlight some of the layouts built by our team members, this time a joint effort, by our Guildford branch team for the local British Transport Police to use as an educatiional tool to promote rail safety.

In 2022 the British Transport Police joined with Network Rail and other rail industry partners to encourage people to consider the serious and devastating consequences, for them and their loved ones, when they ignore warnings and go onto the railway.

The You vs Train campaign aims to help get the rail safety message across to children and young people, and when PC Ian Kennerley of the Emergency Intervention Unit of the British Transport Police asked the Guildford Branch if they produce a rail safety diorama we were only too happy to help.

The model, designed to be easily transportable and removed from its protective plastic crate, has already been used across the south to engage with and educate community groups. PC Ian Kennerley also advised “Engaging with and educating schools, colleges, and community groups forms a key part of our efforts to forge strong local ties and ensure we are taking proactive steps to raise awareness of the dangers associated with the railway. As a national force responsible for policing a unique and transient environment, having the resources to provide an immersive learning experience to at-risk groups has proved invaluable.”

The layout is incredibly condensed and although we have tried to be as accurate as possible, compromises have been taken such as with the third rail and overhead catenary. After all, the point of the layout isn’t the accuracy of a place.
