The Great North Eastern Railway (GNER) operated the InterCity East Coast franchise between April 1996 and December 2007, operating its trains between London and Scotland, and to Yorkshire and the north-east. At the start of its operations, GNER operated a fleet of HST Class 43 power cars and Mk3 carriages that were inherited from British Rail. These worked alongside Class 91 electrics with their Mk4 carriages and Driving Vehicle Trailers (DVTs), the HSTs finding favour on routes to destinations where electrification had yet to be completed. Power cars 43120 and 43115 were part of the inherited fleet, and were soon re-liveried in the GNER’s striking blue with red stripes and gold lettering, as carried by the Hornby models, with 43120 powered and 43115 non-powered in the two-car Train Pack.
