234 Ratio Level Crossing with Gates. Level crossings were most popular with the light railways, such as those in Kent, but are occasionally found on express routes. Gates were often opened by hand, but some had hand wheel operation from a hut alongside. A few are still in use today, usually on branch lines and in industrial locations. They would normally be left to closed traffic, with the crossing being protected by stop signals either side.
