Hornby say "There is surely no locomotive quite as famous, or synonymous with Hornby, as the LNER’s No. 4472 ‘Flying Scotsman’, and we are excited to present a new version of this true icon to the range. For this model, ‘Flying Scotsman’ is depicted in British Railways lined green, with Lion and Wheel crest on the tender, which is the scheme it currently wears for mainline charter duties and visiting heritage railways."

History:
Arguably the most famous steam locomotive in the world, Nigel Gresley’s ‘Flying Scotsman’ emerged from Doncaster Works as ‘A1’ No. 1472 in 1923, the very first locomotive to be delivered to the newly-formed LNER. In February 1924, the locomotive was named ‘Flying Scotsman’ after the London King’s Cross-Edinburgh Waverley express service on which it was a regular performer. Later numbered 4472, it twice represented the company at the British Empire Exhibition and was the first locomotive to set an authenticated speed of 100mph. It was rebuilt as an ‘A3’ in 1947 and following retirement in 1963, became privately preserved and has toured both America and Australia. It is now part of the National Collection and performs regularly on the main line and at preserved railways, currently in its BR guise as No. 60103, as depicted by the model.
