KMRC Skrifa - Staff layouts#4 – Wheal Penbasset  – 00 Gauge

Within our team at KMRC as well as simply selling model railways we pride ourselves on being able to offer practical advice for our customers in our branches as many of the team are experienced railway modellers in a wide range of gauges, eras and control systems.

This is the fourth of a series of Skrifa posts to highlight some of the layouts built by our team members. 

Wayne Sharrocks is a member of our Warehouse team playing a key part of our promt despatch service and also dealling efficiently with any returns.

Wheal Penbasset is a fictional shunting puzzle style layout, in the theme of a goods yard, the main commodity being coal. The layout is set somewhere in the GWR region at some point during the late 1940’s to the early 1950’s.

It is close enough to the Southern Region so that you might sometimes see the occasional Southern loco (such as a KMRC Beattie Well Tank) arriving to pick up it’s goods train including perhaps a KMRC ex LSWR Road Van...

All of the structures on the layout, with the exception of the loco servicing point, have been scratch built from sheets of Slater’s plasticard and Plastruct beams. These have then been painted and weathered. The buildings on the layout were Wayne's first ever scratch-built buildings.

The track is Peco Code 75 and is ballasted with real limestone. Weathering has been achieved using a variety of methods, mainly painting then adding weathering powders, coal dust and ash to really build up the grimy look you would expect to see in such a location.

The layout is framed, with the intention of drawing the eye to the scenic section, exactly what you would like when the layout is intended to be taken to exhibitions. There is an LED light strip hidden on the inside of the frame, which illuminates the whole scene evenly. Besides this, there is also a Gaugemaster Scenic Sounds module to add background sounds to the scene.
