History
Built at Crewe Works, this locomotive entered service at Cardiff Canton as D1653 in January 1965, and became No. 47069 under TOPS in 1974. In February 1986, it was fitted with Electric Train Heat and became part of the subclass ‘47/4’ and renumbered 47638. In November 1989, the locomotive was one of a number fitted with extra fuel tanks to give them an extended range, and was renumbered 47845. Following privatisation of BR, No. 47845 was used – along with others in the 478XX number range – by Virgin CrossCountry, prior to the introduction of the new Class 220 ‘Voyager’ trains in 2001. It received its fifth number in May 2002 when it was rebuilt as a Class 57 as No. 57301.
