History
What is today known as the Class 47 was a 1960s development by Brush Traction as part of the BR Modernisation Plan, designed to remove steam locomotives from Britain’s rail network. Such was its success, that 512 were built by Brush at Loughborough and at BR’s Crewe Works between 1962 and 1968. Pre-TOPS, these locomotives were known as ‘Brush 4s’ (Brush Type 4). This example was introduced in February 1965, allocated to Swansea Landore, and soon after received the name ‘Isambard Kingdom Brunel’. Later painted in BR blue and numbered 47484, it was withdrawn in June 1998 and preserved by the Pioneer Diesel Group.
