Prototype
The basis of the standard BR Goods Brake Van was the LNER ‘Toad E’ which had several modifications during early construction notably the full length footboards extending from headstock to headstock and the provision of horizontal grab rails along the edge of the concrete end platforms. Up to 1955 vans were fitted with oil lubricated axle boxes, later roller bearing axle boxes were fitted as stand and from 1957 Oleo self-contained pneumatic buffers replaced the spindle type. In all 4632 were produced for British Railways at Darlington works with a final lot at Ashford. Lot 3402 referred to the construction of six standard goods vans to BR Diagram 1/507 for London Transport in 1962. The last brake vans were withdrawn in the early 90’s
