39-210B Bachmann BR Mk1 NKA 'Super GUV' High Security Mail Van Rail Express Systems WEATHERED

New release - pre-orders invited - expected December 2026 / January 2027

Bachmann has long produced a variety of models to allow the fascinating world of mail trains to be replicated in OO Scale, and that range has just grown further with the addition of the BR Mk1 NKA ‘Super GUV’. The ‘Super GUVs’ were created in the mid-1990s from redundant Mk1 GUVs which were refurbished to give them a sleek, modern look with flush sides and ends and three lockable roller shutters on either side. Running on Commonwealth bogies, ‘Super GUVs’ were equipped with air brakes only and old vacuum brake gear was removed. Through wiring for ETH was fitted and RCH jumper cables were added to enable multiple working.

The ‘Super GUVs’ entered the Rail Express Systems (RES) fleet, finished in the house colours of red and grey and they were marshalled as part of Royal Mail trains operated by RES – these were often formed of ‘Super GUVs’ and ‘Super BGs’ hauled by Class 47s and Class 90s, and could also feature a Propelling Control Vehicle as modelled by EFE Rail to allow the train locomotive to shunt the train at mail depots with control from either end and without the need for a second locomotive. The ‘Super GUVs’ passed to EWS upon Privatisation but were largely made redundant when EWS’s contract with Royal Mail ended in late-2003.

The Branchline ‘Super GUV’ boasts a precision moulded bodyshell capturing the contrast between the smooth sides and ends and the corrugated roller shutter doors. A separate roof completes the look, and this is adorned with individually fitted roof ventilators. The chassis boasts full truss rod framing, along with the appropriate air brake equipment and ancillary gear added from separate components.

ETH connectors and RCH jumper cables are modelled at either end while ETH cables and air pipes are included for optional fitting too. Bogies are reproduced in full relief and are equipped with metal bearings into which metal wheelset are fitted, and a close coupling mechanism with NEM couplings pockets is built into the floor to provide close coupling without restricting use of the model on curves.
