Signalling is an essential lineside feature of any railway operation, large or small, and the use of ‘tokens’ was once paramount to the safe working of any single line section. Whilst much of the equipment needed for the token system was usually hidden away inside the Signal Box, platforms like this were used by the bobby to exchange single line tokens with train crews as they entered or left their section, so why not site one alongside the Signal Box on your layout.
